Cars continue to be a key element of the Fast & Furious saga, so we set out to create an experience that puts players in the driver’s seat of non-stop cinematic-style action that’s inspired by the movies.
Once we knew the kind of story we wanted to tell within the Fast & Furious universe, and the meta game of the multiplayer Online Ops experience, we began choosing representative cars for each character, and a roster for each online class, with the help of Dennis McCarthy, the saga’s official car coordinator.
For Dom it was easy – we wanted an all-star showcase of his past vehicles, so we picked the Daytona Charger he used in Furious 6, the Plymouth GTX we last saw in Fate of the Furious and, of course, his iconic 1970 Dodge Charger R/T. And then we created a special ‘modified’ car that perfectly suits a particular situation he finds himself in (no spoilers!). We’ve seen off-road and ice variations previously, so I think you can imagine what might come next…
Both Letty and Roman follow the vehicle styles set in the movies, with Letty driving her 1966 Corvette Stingray from Fate of the Furious, as well as a classic Pontiac Firebird and a 1973 Datsun 240Z that Han gave her. Roman, on the other hand, still favors flashy cars such as the modified Aston Martin DB11 and bright red Ford GT with racing stripes that’ll feature in-game.
For newcomers Vienna Cole and Cam Stone, we wanted to ensure rivalry in their car preferences just as Dom and Brian had for US Muscle versus Imports. Vienna is the head of her family and is always looking over her shoulder to the past with regret and guilt. So, it made sense that her character would want to restore older vehicles as a way of dealing with her grief, which is why she drives restored ’60s/’70s classics – a 1973 Mazda RX3, 1966 Ford Mustang and 1969 Dodge Dart. Plus, one special car – the same blue 1969 Camaro Yenko we last saw in 2 Fast 2 Furious. She and Cam recovered that car and are now the new owners, having restored it back to its original beauty.
Cam, on the other hand, is always looking to the future, impulsive and eager for the next bit of excitement. That translates into their technical skills, favouring electric power and upcoming concepts or prototype vehicles – the direct opposite of Vienna’s love for the past.
When riding with Cam you’ll get to drive the stunning NIO EP9, Jaguar iPace, and the BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe Concept – a machine designed specifically for this game by BMW.
In our Online Ops multiplayer mode, cars are categorized into classes of “Power,” “Terrain,” “Speed,” “Lightweight,” or “Tech.” Each come with differing stats such as Top Speed, Drift Ability, In-Air Aftertouch, Health, Damage or Off-Road Suitability.
There are also some amazing machines such as the Devel Sixteen, McLaren 720S, and Jeep 715 Crew Chief Concept, all with customizable paint, wraps, license plates and emotive sprays.
